family celebrating 4th of JulyAs many across the nation work their last day of the week, it may come as a surprise that today should technically be the real day of Independence. July 2, 1776 is the actual day that the Continental Congress voted for Independence. To take it a step further, John Adams even wrote that July 2nd would be remembered and celebrated throughout American History. You are probably pretty upset you had to come in to work on such an important day in American History huh? Well to ease your pain and to get you into the holiday spirit, we’ve provided you with even more fun facts about the 4th of July… Hmm, it almost doesn’t have the same ring to it now.

Fun Fact #1: Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on a “laptop.” In those times a laptop was considered a writing desk that would sit on the writer’s lap.

Fun Fact #2: There were 200 copies made of the printed version of the Declaration of Independence, which was originally called the Dunlap Broadside. Only 27 copies are accounted for today.

Fun Fact #3: In 1870, as part of a bill to officially recognize other holidays such as Christmas, Congress declared July 4th an official unpaid holiday. In 1939 Congress changed the 4th of July to a paid Federal Holiday. THANK YOU CONGRESS!

Fun Fact #4: The 4th of July is the biggest hot dog day of the year. An estimated 155 million hot dogs and 700 million pounds of chicken are consumed on this day.

Fun Fact #5: To avoid further damage, the Liberty Bell has not been rung since 1846. For symbolic effect, the bell is tapped 13 times on the 4th of July.

Fun Fact #6: In 2012 the U.S. imported $227.3 million worth of fireworks from China. In comparison, the U.S. only exported $11.7 million that same year.

Know that fireworks can be dangerous and should always be handled responsibly. There are some states **cough cough California** that are desperate for water, so let’s prevent as many fires as possible this summer. Remember, only you can prevent fireworks fires.
